These are unsolicited comments from major contributors. The letters they refer to were updates on activities and progress; none were requests for funding. [Brackets indicate omissions I made to mask the identity of writers and client organizations.]

"Thank you for your year-end letter, and for all your letters during the year. I would guess that most of them go unacknowledged, but Iím very sure theyíre appreciated by all of us who receive them.... It means a great deal to those receiving letters if they can clearly absorb the message within a letter, enjoy reading it, and above all trust the sincerity of the sender. You do an outstanding job of it, my friend, and I always enjoy hearing from you."

[Internal e-mail from a manager of membership programs] "Dave -- your June letter on [policy issue] lives on. We sent an e-mail version of the letter to approximately 9,000 donors. It generated two dozen 'wow, good work!' e-mails. Thatís more than triple our usual number of comments from an e-mail."
